Florence is known throughout the world for its many artistic and architectural treasures. A visit to Florence, or Firenze as it is known in Italy, should be high on your list, or at the very least consider the surrounding region, the even more famous region of Tuscany, the epitome of all that is Italian savoir-vivre; good food, fine wine, rich history and welcoming people.
Although there are a lot of fine hotels in Florence, some even situated right next to the Ponte Vecchio or the historical centre, we preferred a small boutique hotel, not far from the centre, along the river Arno, one of the few in Florence with a pool, an essential service during the hot Italian summer.
Ville sull’Arno is situated in an old villa just outside the old centre. The building has been well renovated and extended in 2013, creating a homely feel, this is after all not an over the top luxury palace, no, this hotel and its staff rely on low-key, but excellent service.
The whole hotel has an Italian cottage feel, and the rooms reflect that. The standard rooms are a bit small, but clean and with enough storage.
One of the strong points of this hotel is the delicious food prepared throughout the day. At breakfast a wide selection of local Tuscan and Italian delights await, all quality products. The chef prepares most of his dishes with local products and the core of the wine list consists of delightful Tuscan wines.
The swimming pool next to the Arno is ideal for a refreshing dip after a visit to one of the many museums of Florence. Enjoy the free spa facilities in the basement, a hammam, color-therapy, sauna and pool. Spa treatments can be arranged.
We recommend visiting the Galleria deli Uffizi and the Palazzo Vecchio on the Piazza della Signoria. No visit to Florence would be complete without seeing the Duomo and Giotto’s Campanile. A bit outside of the city are the Boboli gardens and the (uphill!) trek to San Miniato al Monte is certainly worth it just to enjoy the wonderful view.
We recommend the Ville Sull’Arno if you are looking for a more intimate place to stay in Florence.
